It's also one of the nicest looking nuggets I have ever found.

I was looking through some old pictures and I found one from my first streak, the streak that got me hooked on gold panning.

The streak was 2 1/2 ounces and this is a picture of all the big pieces I found. 2005 was an awesome gold year for me.

Good luck out there,

We had a great Monsoon season with around 20 inches of rain, but since then we have had around 3 inches of rain and with a few exceptions the creeks remain dry. On top of that we had a bitter cold spell with temps at night in the single digits, any water we did have was frozen solid.

Needles to say the winter panning season has been put on hold, but thankfully it started raining last night and right now I have some small lakes in my yard! Supposed to keep raining until Monday night so I am heading out on Tuesday to do some exploring and maybe get some gold.

Good luck out there,

California is preparing for heavy flooding this winter due to a strong El~Nino which means we will likely see some flooding in Arizona also. I haven't been out panning in almost 2 months as I am waiting for winter rains to start.

For all you Road Runner prospecting club members out there, I will be speaking at Novembers meeting on Thursday the 15th, so if your in Phoenix and can make it to the meeting I'll see you there.

Thats about it for now, hopefully the rains will start soon.

Good Luck out there,

My reply: If I thought that would work I would do it, but these pickers are deep in the crevices and a vac just cant get to them. The dirt laying on the surface has no gold in it.

Comment: Ya but how much are you overlooking trying to get to the pickers probably be few ounces in all that area -There`s some serious cracks there and to much garbage around it might as well do a clean up of the area and then with the dust gone the pickers will reviel themselves easier , Can`t hurt your going to win regardless fine or coarse gold. Geez thats a nice area Say do a 6ft block cleanup then wash it all .

My reply: Lol, I spent 2 hours working around that 2 foot area and got the picker and some dust. Just isnt as much gold there as your thinkin there is.

Comment: But being unwashed the gold is unseen - " I " would try it .

My reply: You have the same mythconception as many people do. Gold concentrates in very specific locations on a creek, most the gravels in a stream bed contain very little gold, on some creeks you will only find gold deep in the crevices as the source of the gold disappeared years ago......

Good luck out there,
I usually start checking the weather forcast about the middle of July but today I heard a rumor so I looked into it and here is what I found.

Im not sure if this means an early monsoon season, I dont think it does, but if nothing else Wednesday and Thursday are looking good for some panning. Even if we dont get any rain the temps will be low enough that I wont suffer heat stroke lol.

Good luck out there,

Temps are already in the mid 90's here and will hit triple digits by next week, way to hot for panning.

We have about 4 weeks until the monsoons start, which doesnt guarantee rain, and we need it as all the creeks in the area are dry. I managed to get a 2/10ths picker today and not much else.

I'll be getting out alot more as soon as we get a few good storms through the area. Until then, Happy Hunting

It did finally rain/snow here yesterday but not enough to get things moving, so I'm still waiting for that all day rain event that will expand my hunting grounds. For now its water jugs and mud holes yee-haa.

Well thats about all I got so enjoy the picture, and if you have any questions let me know.
I did find another picker (actually its almost a nugget, it weights just over 4/10ths of a gram. Its the big one on the left.) from the dry creekbed Ive been working, and now I'm convinced there will be nuggets in this area.

Starting this weekend, propanner.com will now redirect to this blog and I will be water marking my videos with this address. I will also place links on my other sites that will bring you here. If you are interested in purchasing a pocket dredge you can contact me through my you-tube channel.

Looks like its gonna be dry here for a while longer, and lugging water is not so bad, but it does limit the areas I can pan in.
Heres the take for this week....

Gold Rush Alaska's new season starts this Friday at 9 PM, and it looks like the guys are back at the old claim so maybe this year they'll hit bedrock. I hope so as I really want to see the gold that comes out of that pit.

So I will start this season off with a cell phone picture (sorry about the quality) of a short trip last friday.

I pulled this 1.1 gram nugget from a crevice and the best part was I got it first pan of the day.

I'll check out you're videos right now! I just bought some gold equip at a garage sale yesterday so thats why I'm looking into it. Its a small but complete set up. Ya know, dredger, sluice, pans, etc. Probably a dumb question but do you HAVE to have a claim to use this stuff or are they any open areas where nobody cares? Heh.. again, probably a dumb question.

A: Dredges are iffy, depending on where you are at. In California dredging is illeagal now, same here, unless your on a private claim so I woudl'nt use it until you know the rules. Panning is legal in all national forests and BLM areas UNLESS they have rules stating otherwise. If your new start off small, just learn how to find gold with your pan and work your way up. Alot of guys give up shortly after they start because they just cant find the good stuff. Be Patient and use ur head.

Q: Watched the videos. Pretty cool. Very exciting. I'm very curious as to why so many people post videos on youtube about how to find gold. Aren't you all afraid that you're making competition for you'rselves? I mean, why give away the techniques that you all worked so hard to learn? Seems odd.

A: I have told these "secrets" to so many people over the years, and for some reason it just does'nt stick. I'm at almost 20 ounces since 2005 because my hobby has become an obsession, its very challanging and most people just give up or are content with finding a few flakes. Theres alot of gold out there, but do you have drive and the sense to find it?

Q: Hmm... How much is it to buy an average small claim in AZ? I'm sure it depends on a lot of factors but just a ball park figure would be good.

A: DONT BUY A CLAIM!!!! If you do the research and stake you own claim it's $150.00 per year upkeep fee. If you BUY a claim it can cost thousands of dollars and there is NO guaratee there is any gold on it. Steer clear of people who sell claims, most just stake a claim and never set foot on it, then sell it to some poor fool.

Q: Yeah, I can imagine most people giving up if they don't hit it big on the first day. lol. Do you think the price of gold will continue to rise?

A: Dunno, As gold gets higher the dollar gets weaker, so not sure wishing for $2500.00 dollars per ounce is such a good idea.

Propannerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16415444276656661567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7443278754167040419.post-86160812249121103632011-05-22T09:07:00.000-07:002011-05-22T09:07:09.847-07:00

I love a good debate, and this guy has some good questions. This is ongoing at you-tube on the Saturday Suprise video.

Q: So you're saying that the more you dig, the more you find? Becuase you stated that "the more you dig, the more you find" is the biggest fable out there. I'm still not sure what you mean. Thanks for the reply.

A: All depends on "Where" you are digging. Yesterday I dug a spot on Lynx creek, the richest gold stream in Arizona. The bedrock I was working was a soft clay type shist, very rare for the area I was working, I found 2-3 dollars worth of gold. Why? Beacuse gold forms in streaks, the area I was working was about 70 feet from bank to bank, a streak is usually from 6-8 inches wide. If the streak had been running across this bedrock Im sure it would have been a 2-3 hundred dollar day. So the point is, not all the gravels in a streambed contain gold. Specks and small pepper sized flakes are common, and can be found scattered throughout the creek. I think I'll go out tomarrow and make a video just for you and try to explain this a little better. Thanks for the question.

Q: Well pound for pound, it sounds like the more dirt you move, the better you're chances are overall.
I have another question for you. During the rainy season, doesn't the floods wash away most of the existing gold and deposit new gold? So wouldn't most areas kind of be reborn with new gold to find?
So its sort of like brand new land with gold after each rainy season? So in theory, a hundred years vs a year would be the same? Sort of anyway? I suppose its not but how??

A: On lynx creek we just dont get enough rain to move 4 feet of overburden. The last big move on Lynx was 7 1/2 years ago, some areas got striped out and pocketed alot of gold, others didnt change at all. Some areas on Lynx are so wide that its likely the overburden will never move unless someone moves it with a shovel. Smaller washes pocket gold more often with alot less rain and thats why I hunt them. The wider the creek, the more water you need to get the same result.

Q: Ok, forget lynx creek. How about other rivers and creeks? I mean the ones that get so huge, they wash away houses. After the river goes back to normal, wouldn't there be a lot of brand new placer gold?

A: Depends.... There are three factors involved with your question. How much gold is in the area, how wide the creek is, and how much water runs through it. Gold drops here the same way it does in California or Georgia, the only differences are the three things I mentioned above. If you havent yet, check out 4 of my videos, The Flood, and After the Flood parts 1,2 and 3. Huge flood and yes we found ALOT of gold for several weeks after.

Normally we are in our dry season by now so any rain is a good thing.

As you may have figured out I'm a terrible blogger, get me on the creek and I can chat up a storm... Sit me infront of a computer and I cant think of anything to say LOL.

I will endeavor to do better.

When I locate a new wash, or go back to an old one, I look for patterns or similarities that have pointed me to gold in the past.

Here in Arizona the process of gold pocketing in the bedrock is a slow one. If someone got to a drop before you did, it could take years for the gold to redeposit in the same drop. Rainy years speed up the process and dry ones slow it down, unlike California where just the snow melt can bring pounds of gold down from the high mountains.

If your hitting drops but showing no color, just keep moving ( I ususally go upstream) until you start seeing gold in your pan. Once you find gold its time to start looking for those patterns that have produced in the past. This is where patience comes into play. There are atleast half a dozen tests I do to try and pin-point the streak. On a twenty five foot wide creek your trying to locate a zone usually six inches wide or less. This could take a few hours or even a few trips, but be patient and it could pay off in ways you never expected.
It's a wash I've never hunted so I cant wait to start sampling. No water there so we're taking detectors, water jugs and panning tubs, should be fun.

So Gold Rush Alaska was'nt to bad last night, that nugget was sweet. Hope I find one today. Wondering if those last two episodes are the last of the season, or the last of the series....

Well good luck out there.

I plan to have all the items I use in the videos, pans, screens, etc. available on the products page. Should be up and running soon. Over the next few weeks all my pages will be directed to Propanner.com.

Check out the Black Sand Pirates tab. This is an idea I tossed around for a while. I finally discussed it with a few friends and it just took off.
By request I added a few games so if you have time click on the Games tab. Be warned, Gold Strike can be very addictive!
Well thats about it for now, Welcome Aboard.
Well I just did and believe me it's time for a new name. I'm leaning towards "Propanner's Pocket Dredge", but to make this a little more interesting you can post your own ideas for the new GoldTube name. Just post it in the comments section, and lets keep it professional ie I'm not gonna rename it "GoldBong" lol.

UPDATE: So it's official, anyone who chooses the new name will get a free "insert name here" pocket dredge.

Thanks,
We did get some good rain just not as much as I was hoping for and now we have the second round heading this way. We're supposed to get heavy snow in Prescott, which means heavy rain in the lower elevations so this is a good thing.

The temps here for the weekend are only going to be in the low 30's so I'm heading for the desert to try out a few washes I noticed while using google earth, should be some gold there but you never know so I have a backup plan to do some sluicing just incase.

I will try to get some video this weekend so until then,

Good luck out there.
I was watching the radar on and off last night and from the look of it there was alot of gold moving around in arizona.

It looks like I'll be getting out saturday and sunday so I plan to have some fresh video by sunday night, might even have two if saturday goes well. It's times like these I just wanna skip out on work and hit the creek, but if I could make a REAL living panning for gold I would.

So thats about it for now, Merry Christmas all and good luck out there.
Alot of how to info is really nothing more than a smoke screen to get you to buy that new wonder tool, note the word TOOL. You can spend alot of money on prospecting equipment, but if you don't find much gold now, that $500.00 tool isn't gonna help you. The pan I use in my videos I bought used for $7.00 5 1/2 years ago, so with roughly a $25-$30 dollar investment I have found 19 ounces of gold. So whats my point, well my point is, tools are for recovering gold you have already found, tools don't find the gold for you.

One of the most important things I learned early on was something almost everyone overlooks, once I figured this out it really increased the amount of gold I was finding. Almost all prospectors will tell you to look for black sand, the problem is that it's sand and it's found all over a wash and it does'nt really tell you anything. Now we all know gold comes in different sizes, nuggets, pickers, and fines, well black sand (magnetite) does to.

In the picture above you can see "nuggets" of magnetite scattered all over the bedrock, there are even some pieces wedged in the crevices. Now if you were standing on this wash and had a full view you would notice that these black sand "nuggets" seem to be forming lines or "streaks" and although magnetite is'nt as heavy as gold, gold does the same thing in a wash. Next time your out prospecting try looking for these black sand "nuggets" and be sure to sample where they pile up. If you get good at spotting these streaks you never now what you'll find.

Well by the last 15 minutes of the show it got better, and then I saw the trailer for the January 7th show and it looks pretty sweet. I'm thinking this show is gonna be a big hit.

Tomarrow I may have time in the afternoon for some panning, but sunday is my big day 'cause I'm heading for new ground and water should'nt be a problem as we had a good amount of rain yesterday.

Well thats about it for tonight and if you have'nt started watching the gold rush show you might want to start.

Good luck out there,

JKLyonPropannerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16415444276656661567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7443278754167040419.post-89503303413619865702010-12-16T08:37:00.000-07:002010-12-16T08:37:07.209-07:00It's Raining Well it finally started raining here, rained a little yesterday, but started raining really good late last night and is supposed to rain all day today. I don't think it's gonna cause any flooding, but it will leave pocket's of water for panning.

So I'm thinking I might head south of Prescott on sunday to do some exploring, This is my favorite thing to do in the winter, and it can really pay off. Patience is the key here, and you really have to like hiking. The more ground you cover, the more likely you are to find a sweet spot.

Sample any wash you find no matter how small it is. The first thing to look for is exposed bedrock, if you dont find any try working a few boulder piles. This should give you an idea of what kind of gold is hiding in that wash.

Well I guess I should get to work, though I really want to go panning this morning.

Good luck out there,
This is the main reason I like hunting smaller washes, dont get me wrong, there is still ALOT of gold on upper lynx, but there is also alot of overburden that has to be moved in order to get it.

I'm a big fan of letting the creek do the work for me, this is almost impossible on upper lynx as many parts of the creek are 50 feet wide or more, and I cant imagine how much rain it would take to move the overburden in those areas. Locating a streak in this area is also a near impossible task, as streaks tend to be less than a foot wide. I'll talk more about streaks later.

So tomarrow I'm off to a little hot spot that has given up 6 pickers, and my gut tells me theres a nugget near by, never shrug off a gut feeling, it does'nt always pay off, but it has worked enough times to convince me to act on it. I have some video of the spot already but I'm not going to upload it till I'm sure I have worked this spot completely.

It's a busy week for me as I'm sure it is for everybody being so close to Christmas. Saturday is a no prospecting day, but I may be able to get out on Sunday. There is a small chance for rain almost everyday this week and I'm getting impatient waiting for those winter rains. Well Merry Christmas all, and I should have a video to upload this week.

Good luck out there,
Myself and a few others are heading for Lynx creek in the morning, we're meeting at bannie mine road at 8AM and hiking upstream to do some panning.

Last years winter rains really moved things around up there, and we had a pretty good monsoon this year, so our panning trip could produce some good results. Though I'm not a big fan of upper Lynx creek, the reason being that most of the bedrock is not user friendly, meaning its hard as steel and smooth as glass and only certain spots hold any good color. The incentive is the amount of water in the last year, I'm hoping that there will be some new bedrock exposures. Even if the bedrock is not user friendly, fresh exposures can really hold some nice gold.

So that's the plan, and I am looking forward to it, and even if we dont find anything it'll be nice gettin out on the creek. Hey if you see this post and show up your welcome to join us, but be there by 8AM, by 8:10 we'll be gone.

Good luck out there,
I had yesterday off but cataclysm (yes I play World of Warcraft) came out yesterday and I spent the entire day lvling up a worgan, shame on me.

So far we have had no winter rains to speak of and the temps are hitting 60 again so the waters not gonna last much longer. There are a few places I'd like to go this weekend, well saturday, sunday is the Prescott Valley GPAA chapter's outting at Fain park in PV, starts at 9AM and we're gonna be taking the group down to the creek for panning lessons, and you dont have to be a GPAA member to come along, so if your not bust sunday stop by.

Well I guess I have 3 days to decide where to go panning on saturday, it's just not an easy choice for me as so many of the washes have good color on them if you know what to look for. Oh well it'll come to me eventually.

Good Luck out there,
